Unleash your inner strength in every aspect of your life with meditation. I cannot promise you super hero abilities in physical strength, nor increase your intellect and problem solving, nor help you become a brilliant creative, but what I can promise is meditation will hone your ability to endure any of the mental and physical hardships it takes to become physically and mentally superior to who you were the day before.

Before I added meditation to my daily routine, my mind would control my focus, like a caffeinated mouse having found spilt coffee in a dirty kitchen. I’d begin a task, and then get distracted with another task, or even proceed accomplishing a task, while thinking about another task to do in the future — or even more so, I’d repeat events from my past and think about what I should have done differently. My mind would spin and my work degraded to where visible signs of quality were few and far between.

After I added mediation to my daily routine, I still sucked at work, but at least it wasn’t from a lack of focus.

My idea of meditation is the act of “sitting.” I remember being put in time out as a child and not being able to take such a cruel manner of discipline. Now, I put myself in timeout. I focus my attention on my breathing, and at first I consciously dictated how I would breathe, 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out, and repeat — soon, I realized I did not have dictate how I breathed, but my body would just do what it needed to be done. After I learned to watch my natural breath, I was plagued by my attachment to my thoughts and I would consciously bring my focus back to my breadth. I am at the stage now, I realize like my breadth, I don’t actually have to control my thoughts, nor stop them for redirection — they are not plaguing me. My thoughts are nothing and I do not have to attach myself to them. There are deeper lessons I’ve learned since practicing “sitting,” but this is my most prevalent lesson.

The result I notice, since adding meditation to my daily routine, is my new quality of “slowness.” I am slower to disengage and change focus from one task to another. I can easily return to my original task if something interrupts me. I am slow to judgement and anger toward myself and others. My empathy has grown. I am more grateful for my life. I enjoy the simple act of breathing.

You should start sitting immediately. Just start where you are — in terms of environment, experience, etc. How long can you sit? try to add 2 minutes on top of what ever your maximum time is after a few sessions. Try to focus on one thing and one thing only, it can be anything — something you see, something you hear, a feeling, a word, a thought, etc. Don’t worry about if you are doing it wrong, for we all become dust, and this is not magic — you are simply sitting. Please, enjoy your moment.
